What is ERP?

Exposure and Response Prevention, or ERP, is an evidence-based form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and is considered a leading treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and related anxiety concerns.

ERP involves intentionally and gradually approaching situations, thoughts, images, sensations, or urges that trigger anxiety or discomfort. At the same time, clients practice response prevention by resisting the rituals, checking, avoidance, reassurance-seeking, mental reviewing, or other behaviors they would normally use to reduce distress.

The goal of ERP is not to prove that a feared outcome will never happen or to make anxiety disappear immediately. Instead, clients learn that they can tolerate uncertainty and discomfort without relying on compulsions. Over time, this helps weaken the cycle of fear and temporary relief that keeps OCD and anxiety patterns going.

ERP is collaborative, individualized, and paced according to each client’s needs. Therapy may include building an exposure hierarchy, practicing exercises in session, completing structured homework between sessions, and applying skills in real-life situations. The overall goal is to help clients regain freedom, make choices based on their values, and participate more fully in life even when anxiety is present.
